In the last few months I read about hundreds of webmasters that complain that there directories aren’t making any money. They may say they make a few dollars a month from featured submissions but from their advertisements they seem to make none.

I did a few tests with some of my directories and encountered some problems with making money from Ad’s. First off making money from pay per click Ad’s on a directory is very hard. The average click rate is horrible compared to a normal site.

This is because most of the people coming to your site, go strait to the submission page. One way to avoid this from happening is to make sure that your user must actually go to the category they are submitting to.

The most important reason you want the person to stay on the site and actually be there is because directory submission software’s such as SubmitEaze allows a submitter to submit without even going to the page. Most of the time it happens to sites that are using the script phplinkdirectory or otherwise known as PHPLD. SubmitEaze strips the submit page from a directory and the only thing the user is shown is the submit field boxes. If you are using PHPLD I highly recommend you choose a different script or else you could possibly insert ads within the submission form.

After months of testing on a few of my sites I realized the power of CPM (cost per impression) affiliate programs. Most webmasters believe that PPC/CPC is the best way to make money online. I heavily disagree, for many reasons.

A lot of the new age websites such as community sites and video sites receive tons of page views yet most of the users of these types of sites rarely care about clicking on an AD. Another reason they don’t is because they are active members of the site and have become AD blind.

The solution to this common problem is to use CPM ads. When using CPM affiliate programs you get paid whether your users look at the AD’s or not. Affiliates are paid using a set pay scale usually ranging anywhere from $0.50 to $5.00 per thousand page views. Another great reason to use CPM is if you have a lot of return traffic. Ip addresses for page impressions are counted every 24 hour period. Meaning you if user A comes to your site today, and returns tomorrow, that user will be counted for 2 impressions.

I ran across a site the other day call PaidActions. Basically the site is a digital products club, with a membership you receive access to thousands of e-books, web scripts, templates and much more. It’s great for anyone that wants to get their feet wet in the resell market.

The products they have are useful even if you don’t decide to sell them. The membership fee is $25 a month which isn’t bad considering how many products they give you.

The title of this post says it all except that fact that you may have to do a little work in order to make money on the internet. But as an active webmaster I thought of different ways that anyone could earn some extra cash.

As a webmaster it does not always make sense to EVERYTHING that has to be done with a website. For example my personal knowledge on web design is very poor, yet these days a person can get a designer for as little as $5-$10. By hiring someone it saves me countless hours of learning how to design, creating and editing, and more importantly my time.

This is why many people can make money off of webmasters just like me! If you go to webmaster marketplaces such as DigitalPoint and SitePoint there are thousands of designers waiting for jobs. Most these designers are desperate for money so they charge any where from $5-$25 for their design work.

If you were smart about it you could create your own web design business, without knowing a single thing! All you would have to do is get clients to your website or contact fellow webmasters that need a designer. At that point you would be able to name your price.

For example: The designer you hire to do the project for a client cost $10. You charge the client $30. You just made $20 without the headaches of creating the initial project.

If you think out of the box there are many industries where you could do the exact same thing applying these simple ideas and principles. Of course this not for everyone, the people that would succeed would need to be good with people. Also outstanding support skills would be a must. One would have to interact with potential clients in order to make the sale.

Next the important factor to a directory is building its page rank… Now there are a number of ways to increase page rank. You can submit your site to other directories, use forum signatures, or pay someone to do link building for you.

One of the vital parts of getting people to submit to your directory is listing it on a site like www.directorycritic.com. This is where webmasters rate each directory. You will also gain lots of exposure from the site and its 100% free to list a directory.

Another great place to market your directory is to go to www.digitalpoint.com and in their forums they have a designated area to list directories. You can list it there for free and many people will submit their site to your directory.

After doing this you want to make sure that you have an option in your directory to submit a site for free. You may also create a paid links using the phpld software. I normally price paid links for my new directories at a average rate of $5.

Once doing these steps and marketing your directory properly a directory can make a stable and profitable income with ease.

In the last few years there have been thousands of people making money from their personal web blogs. What is a blog you ask? (where have you been the last 5 years?) If you don’t know what a blog is already its simple. Blogs are basically diaries, journals, or news but the difference is they are on the web!

The best thing to do when starting a blog is to write about things you like or things you like to do. If you try to start a blog just to make money most of the time it will not work out. This is because you will lose interest in your blog and stop writing in it, thus you will not make money.

Blogs do not necessary have to be used to talk about random things about your life. You can use blogs as a news website and many other things.

The key is to make your content interesting and fun to read, if you can do that you will make money from blogs.
